Dancing Our Ways Home
In Both Worlds It is with great joy and celebration that I have agreed to be your "guest speaker." I have heard from afar the wonderful things that happen at the Gathering of Circles each year but have never been able to join you until 2003. Though I know several of you and a few quite well, I feel that I am preparing for a big family reunion at which I will know almost none of my relatives, much less know their interests. Moreover, first thing, you will all focus your attention on me for a couple of hours as I am expected to give you some "wise words." So fear asks "Am I enough?" Fear asks each of us this question at every turn, especially in times of change or threats to/in any of our worlds or when trying something new. |

Bobby and Dan are back this year !
| By popular request (maybe I should say demand) Bobby Ashworth and Dan Leonard will be leading our "aquaintancing" activities Friday morning. We have sorely missed the expertise of these two men to make us laugh, cry and learn all at the same time. This year, they will be first on the agenda. I promise. | ![]() |

Please order your T-shirts here ! Click me !
This year we have a very convenient form to order your t-shirt. We have a great design and it is a great way to show your support of the Gathering of Circles. We charge no fee. We are totally made up of volunteers and only through fundraisers such as this can we pay our expenses. They make great gifts if you happen to be one of those who don't wear t-shirts. If you do wear them, it's a great way to advertise the GOC.
Carol Dawn Photo Book
Carol Whitewater Dawn has created a Gathering Of Circles Photo-ID book. Well over a hundred hours has been spend collecting the photos, resizing them, improving the clarity and creating the layout. She has over 100 people included from GOC photos she has received from Lois Colbridge, Mike Andrews, Cliff Buchanan and many others. The Photo Books are available for a donation. All profits over the cost of materials will be part of the fundraising for GOC expenses. Each book consist of 24 half pages of pictures - 6 double-sided sheets of 8.5 x 11 paper. Booklets printed on high gloss paper (both sides) are the most clear and highest quality. Photo Books are also available with a matt finish. Your name can be printed on the first page for a nominal charge of $2.00. You must order immediately if you want your book to be available at the GOC August 7th. Order here.
Gathering
Of Circles Raffles
Coordinator Kelly Knox
Raffles are another way that we use to raise money for the GOC funding. During the Gathering Of Circles tickets are exchanged for a one dollar donation to the GOC fund. On Sunday morning the tickets are drawn for the specific item shown on the ticket.
Kelly Knox has made an afghan in the ripple pattern, made with rainbow colors. I began this afghan as I waited and waited and waited at the hospital during my mother's crisis. It is bright and beautiful. I will be honored if the afghan is used and loved by member of the Circle.
Debbie Oliver, master drum maker, has offered one of her drums to be raffled.

Kids are welcome !

Cathy Martin Bails is
heading up the children's activities this year. All ages are welcome
from 1 month to 100 years. Cathy is also soliciting help from anyone who
would like to help. Especially she would like some men to help with the active little
tree-climbing boys. E-mail her at cathybails@aol.com
or phone at (915) 675-5605. WinterFox will have a special gift for a
number of kids who attend. Love SwimmingBear is hosting Stars, Stories and
Smoores Friday evening. Nell Baldwin (right) is bringing
the "Children's basket" again this year. She
will bring a basket of toys, books, musical instruments, balls, yo-yo's, etc.
for the children. It will be kept at the Welcome Table. Kids will come get an
item from the basket to play with/use/read and return it when they wish and get
something else. At the end they will return the items unless it's something they
really want to keep. June invites everyone to bring something to add to the
Children's Basket so it will continue to be filled year after year.
Welcome to the Gathering of Circles 2003 !
This annual event is sponsored and supported by various individuals and circles of people in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, California, Colorado, Virginia, and other states who wish to get together and share ideas, ceremonies, spirituality, talents, and friendship. These events include, but are not limited to, various workshops, face painting, world-class pancake breakfast, children's activities, sweat lodges, "Sweet Medicine Dance", Give-A-Way, and feast. We gather on Thursday evening at 6:00 PM for the opening pipe ceremony and introductions. Friday morning is dedicated to introductions and our featured speaker. Afterwards, we provide an itinerary of the various activities for the weekend. Friday afternoon and Saturday morning are scheduled workshops. Separate Men and Women's sweat lodges will be held Friday night, and a co-ed sweat will be available on Saturday night after the "Sweet Medicine Dance". Sunday morning we will all gather again for the give-a-way ceremony and feast. We should be ready to leave the area by 2:00 p.m.
Honor and respect the land and natural life on it as part of our family. Treat it as you would like to be treated. Do not bring any alcohol or drugs. You are responsible for your own meals and camping gear (this is a wilderness area, so bring tent, sleeping bag, etc.). You will need rain gear and rain fly. Port-a-potties are available. Bring a potluck dish to contribute to the Feast on Sunday. Bring noisemakers (drums, rattles, etc.). Rules: Radios will not be allowed except with earphones. Many thanks to these people who make the GOC happen each year.
Give-a-way
Bring
a gift wrapped in a paper bag for the “give-a-way.” This should be something
of significance (meaningful) to you, which you now want to relinquish your
attachment to, and let pass on to a new keeper. The size or monetary value of
this item is irrelevant but the more significant to you the better. It may be
symbolic of something of yourself, which you have or wish to turn loose of so
that your “hands” are freed up for your present pursuits. Listen to your
heart in deciding what to “give-a-way” at this time.
SWEET MEDICINE DANCE
Directions: Go to Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Take Hwy 130 South out of Cloudcroft for 1.2 miles. Turn left at Sleepy Grass Campground or 0.7 miles. Turn right on 5661 for 3.9 miles. Turn left at 5661 marker, look for forked tree on left before turn. Then turn left again immediately and follow road. Signs will be posted.
Registration: Please pre-register with Cliff Buchanan, 1404 Castle Road, Odessa TX 79762, 432-550-3302, WinterFox@GatheringOfCircles.com . We need to know if you are planning to come so we can order the proper number of Port-a-potties! Cliff will be happy to answer any questions you might have about the GOC. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER !
Follow-up
letter for the 9th Annual
Gathering
Of Circles
Cloudcroft, New Mexico
August 7 thru 10, 2003
I
don't know about you but I had a lot of fun at the GOC this year. I trust you
all had a great time also. After the GOC I was thrust back into the "real
world" just as many of you were. I had been off a week so I had to catch up
from that. Then the Blaster Worm virus hit and I was busy from that. Then I have
a client whose owner had passed away and the name of the business changed and
caused a great deal of programming work. Right now I have ten computer systems
to build. I didn't even count the money from the GOC until this morning. Yada,
yada, yada… But, you know what?… I find myself thinking about the sky and
trees at Cloudcroft, about the wonderful pancake breakfast, the beautiful
weather we experienced, the magnificent Sweet Medicine Dance, the focused sweat
lodges, the emotional Give-a-way and most important the new friends I met and
the dear friends I was able to spend time with.
Our
community, the GOC community is very special to me. Everyone was excited and
fired up to get ready for next year. I have already had three people volunteer
for coordinator positions for next year and others for new and different
workshops. Be thinking of what you can do and want to do next year.
Be
sure to use the list of names I have provided. The GOC is not just a bunch of
people who meet once a year in the mountains. It is a family that hangs together
all year and you are a part of that family for as long as you want to be. When
you go traveling, take the list with you. Store a copy in the car. When you find
yourself thinking of a new friend or wondering how someone is doing, give them a
call or go visit or e-mail them and let them know how much you appreciated him
or her.
I
want to thank those who helped make this year one of the best ever. We had
exactly 100 hearts attend this year. We sold all of our 80 t-shirts ordered
(thanks to JJ and Donna). The male/female balanced opening pipe ceremony led by
Pamela was just right; the "aquaintancing"
effort by Bobby and Dan was fantastic as usual; Charles' presentation was
informative and he spoke right to our hearts; all the various workshops were
"right on" and well attended; Virgie executed the sweat lodges
flawlessly (thanks to the S.L. leaders); pancakes were "world famous";
The dance circle was immaculate (thanks Kristie) and the fire was breathtaking
(took my breath away when I thought it might catch the tarps on fire); thanks to
J.J. for running the give-a-way; and to Kelly for the raffle program. There are
many others and especially thanks to the participants. Thanks to Virgie for
bringing new hearts from San Antonio and to "Doctor Dave" for bringing
his tribe from Phoenix. Think about bringing your tribe or circle next year! If
each of us brings just one new person, we can have 200 next year!
