Virgie Ravenhawk: A Journey of Service and Spiritual Awakening
Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Virgie Ravenhawk is a remarkable soul whose life’s path has been shaped by both service and spirituality. She graduated from Ursuline Academy, an all-girls Catholic school, and went on to earn an associate degree from San Antonio College. Virgie joined the Army, where she served with honor for 20 years, participating in conflicts from the Vietnam Era through Desert Storm, ultimately rising to the rank of Master Sergeant. After retiring, Virgie embarked on a profound journey of self-discovery, reconnecting with her Native Indigenous heritage, deeply influenced by her father, who was born on the Wichita reservation in Anadarko, Oklahoma. This transformation led her to sit with esteemed elders and tribal leaders, including Grandfather Cochorra, Bear Heart, Melinda Garcia, Uqualla, and Regina WaterSpirit, to name only a few, whose teachings and wisdom enriched her spiritual understanding and connection to her roots. In 1995, Virgie learned to play the flute, sparking a passion for music that soon translated into recording her work.
By 1997, she began hosting drum circles, creating a space for community connection and spiritual expression that she continues to champion to this day. Virgie met her wife Debi Drumhawk in 2002 and together they have facilitated numerous events focused on spiritual well-being, sweat lodges, and communal healing, establishing their circle as a respected community for all dedicated to nurturing heritage and the spirits of those around them.
Virgie Ravenhawk’s life is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of honoring one’s ancestry while serving others and has been attending the Gathering of Circles since 1998.
